President Prabowo Accelerates Downstream Energy Development and Resilience, Optimizing Natural Resources for National Independence
The government continues to accelerate downstreaming and strengthen national energy security. This was conveyed by the Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) Bahlil Lahadalia after attending a limited meeting with President Prabowo Subianto and several ministers at the President's private residence in Hambalang, Bogor, on Wednesday, March 25, 2026. In his statement, Bahlil explained that the development of the downstreaming program is one of the government's priorities. Of the 20 first-phase downstreaming projects, some have entered the groundbreaking stage, while the remainder are scheduled to begin next month. "Then we added 13 more downstreaming items with a total investment of approximately 239 trillion rupiah and we will discuss the finalization," Bahlil said. In addition to downstreaming, Bahlil also discussed the development of alternative energy as part of efforts towards energy security and self-sufficiency. According to Bahlil, President Prabowo directed that all domestic energy potential be optimized, including ethanol and crude palm oil (CPO)-based biodiesel, as well as accelerating the transition to new and renewable energy. "The President has ordered us to optimize all our energy potential, including ethanol and biodiesel from CPOs. We are also working on how to encourage the energy transition through renewable energy," Bahlil added. On the same occasion, Bahlil also reported on the current price conditions for energy and mineral commodities, particularly coal and nickel. Bahlil emphasized that there have been no policy changes regarding the management of these two commodities, while the government continues to monitor global market dynamics. "Even if prices remain stable, which is good, we will implement relaxation measures, but in a measured manner, regarding production planning. So everything remains within the boundaries of coordination with the market, and the needs of supply and demand. The important thing is that we want prices to remain stable. We pray for stable coal and nickel prices, and then we will implement measured relaxation measures," Bahlil said. Furthermore, Bahlil explained that President Prabowo also gave specific instructions to prioritize the interests of the state in natural resource management. The Head of State emphasized the importance of preserving natural resources as a strategic national asset while simultaneously encouraging the optimization of state revenue from the mineral sector. "The President instructed me to prioritize the interests of the nation above all else, and we must safeguard our natural resources. These are state assets. Therefore, the President also ordered us to explore revenue sources in the mineral sector, which has not been equitable for the nation," Bahlil explained. The government's future target is to ensure optimal downstreaming. The energy transition continues to move forward, and energy commodity production remains balanced with market demand. The government is also striving to maintain competitive commodity prices without sacrificing national interests. With an integrated policy direction ranging from industrial downstreaming, strengthening domestic energy, to sovereign natural resource management, the government aims to create a more robust, independent, and globally competitive national economic structure.
